Badminton: Jwala-Ashwini pair loses

London, Jul 28: Jwala Gutta had a disappointing first day at London Olympics 2012 as she lost both her doubles matches in the group stages in badminton at the Wembley Arena on Saturday.

First, Jwala and her partner V Diju lost in the mixed doubles and later in the day, she and Ashwini Ponnappa began their campaign in women's doubles on a losing note.

Jwala and Ashwini, the Commonwealth Games gold medal pair in Delhi 2010, were expected to fare better. But they lost to Japanese pair of Fujii Mizuki and Reika Kakiiwa in straight games 16-21 and 18-21.

The Japanese combination took 43 minutes to win over their Indian opponents.

Jwala and Ashwini will have three more matches to play in the group stage. They are in Group B. The top two from the four groups advance further to quarter-finals.
