PV Sindhu takes charge as Deputy Collector in Andhra Pradesh Government

Amaravati, Aug 10: Indian badminton star and Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu on Wednesday (August 9) formally took charge as the Deputy Collector in the Andhra Pradesh government.

Key responsibilities of a DC:

A Deputy Collector (DC) is in-charge of maintaining law and order in his/her sub-division, where they are posted.

They are also in charge of all revenue matters, like revenue collection, land matters, issuing of land/title deeds.

Granting house-sites to deserving people, enquring into deaths in police custody or dowry deaths. A DC also takes care for all government lands and properties including trees, wastelands, water bodies, water courses and small local forests.

Salary of a DC:

A deputy collector draws salary of approximately Rs 60,000 per month.

Sindhu takes charge:

Sindhu, was handed over the letter of appointment on July 27, reported to the Chief Commissioner of Land Administration Anil Chandra Punetha in the state capital and assumed her new role as a Group-1 service officer.

She was then posted to Krishna district for training. Sindhu met district Collector B Lakshmi Kantham in the evening and reported for duty.

This is the first occasion when a badminton player has been offered a Grade 1 government job.

However, AP government had also offered a Grade-1 service to shuttler Kidambi Srikanth for for achieving men's singles titles at the Indonesian Open Super Series Premier tournament and Australian Open.

The AP government, in the Budget session of Legislature in 2017, amended the Andhra Pradesh (Regulationof Appointment to Public Services and rationalization of StaffPattern and Pay Structure) Act, 1994, paving way for direct appointment of Sindhu in Group-1 service after she expressed interest in taking up the job.

Accordingly, the GO was issued on Wednesday appointing Sindhu as Deputy Collector (Category-2), subject to condition that she take up the job within 30 days.

"She will be under probation for a three-year periodand undergoing service training," Special Chief Secretary (Revenue) Manmohan Singh said in the order.

Sindhu to focus on badminton:

Meanwhile, official sources said the government might waive the two-year training period for the ace shuttler as she was keen on focusing on her career.

Expressing happiness over her appointment, the 22-year-old said her first priority would be to continue playing badminton.

"My focus will be on the sport only," she had said on the day she was handed over the appointment order.

She had also thanked the Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu for the job.

Sindhu could be an IAS some day:

Since Sindhu has joined the revenue service in the state government, there are optimum chances for her to get inducted into the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) seven or eight years down the line.
