An elite Ranji team can defeat present Sri Lanka Test team, feels Sunil Gavaskar

Pallekele, Aug 14: Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar is not pleased with the current Sri Lankan Test side's performance against India in the ongoing series.

The existing Sri Lankan side failed to pose any threat in their home as the Virat Kohli-led side managed to win the first two tests convincingly.

The hosts' performance in the third match is no different as they are staring at a humiliating series whitewash at the hands of No.1 Test side.

India scored 487 in the first innings in the third Test, in response a spiritless Sri Lankan side folded for 135 in their first innings.

The hosts' poor show with the bat as well with the ball was no match for a superior brand of cricket played by India and this, perhaps, compelled Gavaskar to opine that the existing Lankan side could be easily defeated by an elite domestic side from India.

"To be frank, you can't call this a Test match. The Indian team hasn't been tested at all. A Ranji team in the elite status can beat this Sri Lankan side," said the batting great in the post-match discussion on broadcaster Sony.

Gavaskar's opinion found resonance from former India cricketers Bishan Singh Bedi, Aakash Chopra and Sanjay Manjrekar.

Bedi, the former India captain, wrote on his Twitter handle, "Must say Lankans are terribly patient with their cricket heroes! Had it been with Indians immediate 'security' would've been sought & granted..!! This particular Test series IndVSLanka's forgettable but the very thought that location will soon shift to India's dreadful-poor ad free Test Cricket!"

"No ConTEST Cricket. #SLvIND," wrote Chopra on his Twitter handle after Team India bundled Sri Lankan side for 135 in their first innings.

"Venue for the 3rd Test-Kandy. India's opposition also a bit like that...Candy.😉," wrote Manjrekar on his micro-blogging account.

The Sri Lankan team would now be hoping to forget the humiliating series defeat in the Test series and concentrate on upcoming limited overs series and challenge Team India.
