Andhra Pradesh: Former cricketer sexually harassed, commits suicide

Vijayawada, Oct 12: Maddineni Durga Bhavani, a former Ranji cricketer, committed suicide at her residence in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh on Sunday, Oct 11.

30-year-old Bhavani, who was an all-rounder, was found hanging from the ceiling fan. Reasons behind her decision is yet to be revealed.

Suicide

Bhavani recently made headlines when she had filed a sexual harassment case against against a former Andhra Cricket Association (ACA) general secretary.

Though she had withdrawn the case against the former official, she had claimed that she was pressurised to do so.

She later withdrew her complaint against the official before a court and said that she had been forced by an official from Tirupati to do so.

Speaking about the suicide case, a police officer was quoted as saying, "Bhavani's cousin Durgamba came to visit her in the afternoon and found her hanging from the fan hook. She called Bhavani's brother who rushed to spot."

Bhavan committed suicide after visiting her mother. She had gone to meet her mother on Saturday and returned to Gunadala on Sunday. Her body was recovered around 3:15 pm.

Bhavani had visited her mother's house in One-Town on Saturday and had returned to her house on Sunday morning.

Some family issues could be the reason behind the woman taking the extreme step, Guru Praksh, Investigation Officer attached with Machavaram Police station said.

Police is yet to record statement of her husband Satya Prasad, a sports journalist. Her body has been sent for post mortem, the officer said.

A case under relevant sections of IPC has been registered and investigations are underway, he added.
