Anil Kumble turns 46: Some interesting facts about 'The Milestone Man'

New Delhi, Oct 17: As legendary India spinner and former captain Anil Kumble is celebrating his 46th birthday on Monday (October 17), several former India cricketers greeted him.

The likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag greeted the present head coach of Indian cricket team who is India's leading wicket-taker in ODIs as well as in Tests.

'The Jumbo' of the Indian cricket was always hailed for his astute knowledge of the game, dogged determination and commitment to excellence during his playing days.

The Karnataka cricketer ended his 18-year career with 619 Test and 337 ODI wickets, signing off as unarguably the greatest bowler country has ever produced.

Here are 10 interesting facts from The Milestone Man's illustrious career:

1. Unimpressive Debut:

His performance largely went unnoticed when a 19-year-old Kumble made his his Test debut back in 1990 at the Old Trafford in Manchester. 17-year-old Sachin Tendulkar grabbed all the limelight in this Test after scoring the first of his 100 international hundreds.

Though he made his ODI and Test debut in the same year (1990) but the Karnataka bowler couldn't remain into the squad for long.

2. Wily one makes a comeback:

After is unimpressive debut, Kumble worked hard in the domestic circuit. His performance of 13 for 138 for Rest of India against Delhi in Irani Trophy, which selectors couldn't ignore, helped him get another call up for India. He was selected for the South Africa tour and never looked back, ever since.

3. Among highly educated cricketers:

Kumble was not just a talented sportsperson, he was equally good at studies. He holds a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering and is, till date, India's highly qualified cricketer.

4. Second bowler to have scored 2000 runs and take 500-plus wickets:

He is only the second bowler after Australia's Shane Warne to have aggregated more than 2000 Test runs and scalped 500-plus wickets. He has taken 619 Test wickets 132 games.

5. Navjot Sidhu gave the nickname 'Jumbo':

During a Twitter chat with fans, Kumble revealed that it was former India cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu who nicknamed him 'Jumbo', while they were playing an Irani Trophy match.

"It was during Irani Trophy game when I was playing for Rest of India at Kotla [Feroz Shah Kotla]. He was standing at his customary position, mid-on. One of the balls really took off and he said 'Jumbo Jet.' While the 'Jet' got dropped off, just the 'Jumbo' remained. So ever since all my teammates call me Jumbo," Kumble told.

6. Leading wicket-taker for India:

With 337 wickets in 271 ODIs, Kumble still is India's highest wicket-taker in the 50-overs-format too. His bowling figures of 6/12 against West Indies were a record for 21 years before Stuart Binny broke it.

Jumbo is also the leading wicket-taker for India in Tests with 619 wickets under his belt in 132 games.

7. Only the second bowler to claim a 'Perfect 10' in Tests:

Anil Kumble is only the second bowler in the history of the game, after England's Jim Laker, to have got all the 10 wickets in an innings. Kumble achieved this feat playing against arch-rivals Pakistan at Feroz Shah Kotla.

8. 1999 was the best year in terms of performance:

With 88 wickets under his name, he was third highest wicket taker in the year 1999 after Australia's Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne.

9. Holds the record for most LBW dismissals:

Jumbo also holds the record for most dismissals via leg before in the game. He is also the only bowler to have made most caught and bowled dismissals (35) in his career.

10. Maximum wickets on a single venue in ODIs:

Kumble has taken a total of 56 wickets on the pitch of Sharjah Cricket Stadium, which is the highest by any bowler at a particular venue.
