The tall spinner, with his second five-wicket haul in the 3-match series, has now broken veteran Harbhajan Singh's record.

Both Ashwin and Harbhajan had played in the 1st Test in Galle where India lost by 63 runs. Ashwin had overshadowed Harbhajan by taking 10 wickets. The senior spinner managed only 1 wicket (in second innings).

Ashwin now has 17 wickets in 2 Tests (outstanding average of 16.35) of the series in Sri Lanka, which is the most for an Indian bowler in a series in the island nation. Ashwin is playing in his 27th Test and has 141 Test victims.

Earlier, Harbhajan had taken 16 wickets in 3 Tests in 2008. Now, Ashwin already has 17 scalps and is set to add more in the final Test which starts on August 28.

Virat Kohli-led India are aiming to win a Test series in Sri Lanka for the first time in 22 years. The last victory was in 1993 under Mohammad Azharuddin's captaincy.
