On Wednesday (August 17), Sakhi won India's first medal at Rio Games. She claimed a bronze in Freestyle 58kg category with a 8-5 win over Kyrgysztan's Aisuluu Tynybekova. It was a superb comeback for the Haryana girl after trailing 0-5 in the second round of the bout. (Indians salute 'Supergirl' Sakshi)
23-year-old Sakshi created history by becoming the first female wrestler from India to win an Olympic medal. Overall, she is the 4th woman to achieve the feat. The others being Karnam Malleswari (Bronze in weightlifting in Sydney 2000), Mary Kom (Bronze in boxing in London 2012) and Saina Nehwal (Bronze in badminton in London 2012).
Indian limited overs captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Tendulkar, Sehwag, Ravichandran Ashwin and other cricketers joined in to congratulate Sakshi, via the micro-blogging website Twitter. (Who is Sakshi?)
Sehwag's was the best message, which was retweeted by more than 8,000 users. He wrote, "#SakshiMalik is a reminder of what cn happn if u don't kill a girl child. When d going gets tough, its our girls who get going &save our pride."
