Colombo, March 18: On a day when Sri Lanka crashed out of the cricket World Cup after losing to South Africa, the country's cricketer-turned-politician Arjuna Ranatunga, who is the minister of ports and shipping, joined the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) on Wednesday, saying former president Chandrika Kumaratunga had offered him the post of the SLFP organiser in Gampaha district but he was yet undecided about it.
Ranatunga, who was once in the People's Alliance led by Kumaratunga and later joined the Democratic National Alliance, said he would contest the next parliamentary election on SLFP ticket and most likely from Gampaha.
Ranatunga, 51, had led Sri Lanka to their only World Cup title win in 1996. he had played 93 tests and 269 one-day internationals between 1981 and 2001.
