I had no clue Mohammed Shami's daughter was in ICU: Virat Kohli

Indore, Oct 12: His daughter was in the ICU but fast bowler Mohammed Shami chose not to inform his team-mates and played the Kolkata Test against New Zealand recently. Captain Virat Kohli revealed that he "had no clue" about what Shami was going through and was informed by the bowler only later.

During the 2nd Test in Kolkata, Shami's 14-month-old daughter Aairah was admitted to a hospital due to high fever. She was kept in the ICU. However, Shami continued to play the Test as her daughter was taken to hospital on the second day of the match.

Shami, who is a shy character, did not inform Kohli about his daughter's condition and it was only later that he decided to make the skipper know about what he was going through during the Test.

After the victory in Indore, Kohli was asked about Shami and the Delhi batsman explained that he was a "likeable" character in the team and everyone loved him.

"He (Shami) is someone who is a character in the change room. On the field you won't see him coming out in the open and expressing himself too much. But he is someone everyone loves in the team. He is someone everyone gets along with. Whatever might be happening with him, we won't know. I had no clue that his daughter was in the hospital. He told us after," Kohli told reporters in Indore on Tuesday.

Kohli called Shami a "top bowler" and said he needed a bit of motivation every now and then.

"He is a guy who comes on to the field and gives everything. He just needs a bit of motivation every now and then, which every fast bowler does in conditions that we have. Skill-wise there is no doubt that he is a top bowler. He has a knack of picking up wickets. Even on this wicket (Indore), he created quite a few chances, so does Umesh (Yadav). Shami is just like any normal guy of his age. It is just that he is not expressive on the field. He is very likeable character in the change room and among the team members," he added.
