Indian bowlers came back strongly to bundle out the Blackcaps at 236 in the second session of fifth day after the visitors showed some resilience in the morning session. India have now taken 1-0 lead against Kiwis.

India Vs New Zealand, Kanpur Test, Day 5: Kiwis start with positive intent

Indian bowlers, especially senior off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin (6/132), revelled in home conditions to rip through the visiting team's line-up with more than a session to spare.

This is India's 130th Test win and 88th at home in 500 Test matches the side has played in 84 years. This is India's 7th Test win at Kanpur, 3rd in the year 2016. It is overall 19th win against Kiwis and 14th against them at home.

With this win, India have taken their unbeaten tally on home soil to 11 matches. New Zealand, on the other hand, have remained without a win on the Indian soil since 1998.

Both the teams will now travel to Kolkata, where the second Test is scheduled to begin from Friday (Sep 30). The Kiwis struggled to negotiate a slow track, which offered occasional turn and bounce but improved as the match wore on.

Ashwin traps Kiwis in 2nd innings:

Ravichandran Ashwin wrapped up the New Zealand innings with yet another five-wicket-haul. The Chennai off-spinner bagged 6 wickets in the second innings to help the side register a convincing win over visitors. He bagged total 10 wickets in this match.

The match will also be a remarkable one for Ashwin because he claimed his 200th Test wicket in this match and became the second fastest bowler to achieve this feat.

Ravindra Jadeja was the best performer for India who excelled with bat as well as with ball. Jadeja was adjudged Man of the Match for scoring unbeaten 44 and 50 in both the innings and clinched a fifer in the first innings to bring put his side into driver's seat.

Jadeja pleased with his performance:

Talking about his performance during post match presentation Jadeja said,"Very happy. Just preparing to do my role with the bat, give myself time and then I can play my shots. Duleep final helped me a lot, I was getting wickets in that game too, I was very confident. I'm used to bowling on such wickets, on turning tracks. That's what I was focussed on. I was enjoying myself."

"The wicket was pretty slow in the first innings. I think we tried and mixed the pace, fast, slow. Obviously Ashwin is a very good bowler on slow turning tracks and I would like to congratulate him for 200 wickets. I'm enjoying bowling with him, and whenever wicket was not falling we always talk about what to do. We enjoy each other's company. In the first innings, when Williamson was batting, we used to talk about bowling over or around, bowling fast or slow, etc.," he further added.

Virat Kohli praises bowlers:

Skipper Virat Kohli too was pleased with the team's performance and also lauded Williamson and company for their fighting spirit.

"The boys applied themselves very well. Few moments we were in a spot of bother. Initially we had moment, 100 partnership, couple of soft dismissals. Then Jadeja, Ashwin and Umesh (Yadav) got us 30-40 extra runs. Makes a psychological difference," Virat Kohli said.

"It's a memorable Test, it's been a very good Test, from the second day onwards when New Zealand were batting really well we and Ashwin were chatting how we had to show good resilience to win it. Credit to the, the reason the match went on to the final day was because of the guts they showed," Kohli said.

New Zealand had a mountain to climb:

Facing an uphill task to save the match, the visitors were pushed at the backfoot by the visitors. Chasing an almost unachievable target of 434 runs in 4 sessions the Kiwis only hoped to manage a draw.

The Kiwis struggled to negotiate a slow track, which offered occasional turn and bounce but improved as the match wore on.

New Zealand were tottering at 93 for four in their second innings with the exuberant Luke Ronchi (38) and the steady Mitchell Santner (8) at the crease when stumps were drawn on the fourth day.

The Black Caps required a history-defying effort to win the match as no team has ever chased such a daunting target.

The day's proceedings pretty well for the visitors as they defied Indian bowlers wickets in the early hours of the morning session. Both Santner and Ronchi started things well for the side.

The duo stitched a partnership of 102 runs before Ronchi departed at 80 to give India their first breakthrough of the day.

Ronchi was batting well but a misjudged shot cost him his wicket as Ravindra Jadeja got his first victim of the second innings.

The Black Caps raised hopes of a fight till the time Ronchi and Santner held fort but it all went downhill for them when the former played an extravagant slog sweep off Ravindra Jadeja, handing India the opening.

Ashwin (6/132) completed his fifth six-wicket haul by adding scalps of Santner and Ish Sodhi (17) and Neil Wagner (0) to his three wickets grabbed yesterday when he had become the second-fastest man to take 200-Test wickets.

Ashwin grabbed the remaining three wickets in the post-lunch session to complete India's victory, their 88th on home turf.
