Entire Indian squad to undergo fitness test ahead of Bangladesh series

Kolkata, May 27: All members of the Indian cricket team will undergo a fitness test before leaving for Bangladesh for a short tour beginning on June 10. Normally cricketers who have recovered from injuries are made to undergo the test but this time, the entire squad will undergo the test, an Indian Express report said.

The fitness test will be held on June 6 after the squad assembles here on June 5. It will leave for Dhaka on June 7 to play a one-off Test and three one-day internationals. Virat Kohli will lead India in the Test while Mahendra Singh Dhoni will be captaining the one-day side.

Indian squad to undergo fitness test

BCCI Secretary Anurag Thakur said they decided to make the entire team undergo the test so that no player breaks down mid-way into the series, the report said.

During India's last overseas tour in Australia, which was followed by the World Cup, players like Ravindra Jadeja and Bhuvneshkumar had to return home because of injury during the Test series. Axar Patel and Dhawal Kulkarni replaced them. Jadeja and Kumar joined the squad later for the World Cup.

Fast bowler Ishant Sharma had also suffered a knee injury during the Melbourne Test and missed the final match of the series. He failed the finess Test ahead of the World Cup. Mohit Sharma was his replacement.

The BCCI is hence not taking any chances this time.

The players' fitness was not monitored by the Indian team support staff because they were busy playing the Indian Premie League after the World Cup got over. Usually the board receives feedback on players' finess from the franchise they play for but this time it has decided to do the test itself.

IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla said on Monday that of a player feels tired, he must inform the BCCI secretary. He said the BCCI has a talent pool and a number of players are available for each slot, the Indian Express report said.

Thakur, meanwhile, said that the new coach and support staff of the Indian team will be appointed by June 6, the report added.
