Mboyo hat-trick enables Dempo hold Churchill to 3-3 draw

Margao, Nov 5 (UNI) Riding on a hat-trick by man of the match Mboyo Iyomi, defending champions Dempo sports club came from behind to hold spirited Churchill Brothers to 3-3 draw and shared the points in the ONGC League championship match, played here at Nehru Stadium Fatorda today.

The goals for Churchill came through Felix Chimao in the 15th, 19th minute and Odafe Okolie in the 30th minute. While for Dempo Mboyo Iyomi reduced the margin completing his hat-trick in the 37th, and injury minute of the first half and in the 76th minute.

Churchill played at full steam in the first half and leading by three goals in the first 30 minutes but then collapsed.

With this drawn match Churchill maintained their second place with 12 points from six outings (three wins and three draw) and also maintained unbeaten race intact. While Dempo increased their points tally to seven points from five outings (two wins, one draw and two defeats).

Churchill Brothers got off to an aggressive start with strikers constantly threatening Dempo and shot into the lead as early as in the 15th minute through Felix Chimao Kwa of a well measured pass from Khaitang Paite .

Inspired by a lead, Churchill continued the attacking spirit and increased their lead in the 19th minute again through Felix (His brace). When Odafe Okolie from the top of the box unleashed shot that was blocked by Dempo Goalkeeper Satish Kumar, which rebounded towards Felix, who was lurking inside the goal and pounced upon the opportunity to make it 2-0.

Stung by a debacle, Dempo accelerated the pace of their game and could have increased their lead when Clifford Miranda initiated a move and pass to Renty Martin, who only to beat the rival goalkeeper took time and his feeble shot landed straight into the hands of the rival goalkeeper Arinden Bhattacharya.

Churhill further consolidated their lead in the 30th minute of the first half through their ace striker Odafe Okolie off a pass received from Kalu Ogba.

Down by three goals, Dempo rallied with a spirited attack and reduced the margin in the 37th minute through M boyo Iyomi when Clifford Miranda initiated a move and pass to Mboyo, whose powerpacked shot hit one of the rival defender and went into the net to make 3-1.

Dempo further reduced the margin during the injury minute of the first half again through Mboyo, whose header found the net off a floating pass given by Valerian Rebello to make it 3-2.

Dempo continued to attack and had another chance to equalise in the 50th minute but Climax lawrence's close range shot landed straight into the hands of rival goalkeeper.

Dempo made some desperate attempts for an equaliser and succeeded in the76th minute to restore the parity through Mboyo, who headed in following the flag kick taken by Roberto Mendes Silva and completed his hat-trick.

Towards the close of play, both the teams made some efforts for the match winner but without much success.
