Miandad backs ICC's new referral system

By Super Admin

Lahore, Nov.26 (ANI): Former Pakistan captain Javed Miandad has supported the new referral system, Umpires Decision Review System (UDRS), saying it will help reduce umpires' mistakes considerably.

"It will make an umpire more responsible because as soon as he commits an error he sees it corrected by third umpire," The Daily Times quoted Miandad, as saying.

Miandad said that both the teams would be benefited by the referral system and rejected the notion that it will put extra pressure on the field umpires.

"I don't think so. In my view when their decisions will be reviewed they will be more responsible and thus feel secure from the criticism," he said.

According to the new system, players can ask on-field umpires to consult a colleague with access to ball-tracking technology before making the final decision.

In addition, either the fielding captain or dismissed batsman will be able to request a review of a decision.

The third umpire will need a 'high degree of confidence' that a decision is incorrect, otherwise the original decision will stand. Each team will be allowed two unsuccessful reviews per innings, down from three when the system was first used for trial.

The ICC, however, has backed the system saying it would help eliminate the 'glaring' errors. (ANI)
