MS Dhoni speaks on India's split captaincy, says don't follow foreign teams

Dharamsala, Oct 15: Mahendra Singh Dhoni today (October 15) refused to get drawn into India's split captaincy debate and said the team needs to do the best to succeed instead of following foreign sides. (Am using Kohli's captaincy skills in ODIs: Dhoni)

Many feel Test captain Virat Kohli should take charge of the limited overs team too. However, the new set of selectors backed Dhoni to continue in his job.

With India set to play 5 ODIs against New Zealand from tomorrow in Dharamsala, Dhoni faced the media on Saturday (October 15) and a question about different captains for the longer and shorter formats was asked. (Dhoni to hand over 'finisher' role to new player?)

The 35-year-old Dhoni said India needed to back themselves than to try to copy what foreign teams were doing, be it for captaincy or other things.

"About the split captainship, I think we follow, "will you call West a lot?". I remember a few years back we were talking about split captaincy. Now we are talking about why we have split captaincy," Dhoni, a veteran of 278 ODIs, said.

He continued, "I think a lot of times we look at the foreign teams as to what they are doing and think, "we should be doing that way". It is more about what trend we want to set. What is good for our team, because culture-wise we are very different. The amount of cricket we play is very different.

"The answer is best sorted out from your side (media). You guys have to see what really is best for Indian cricket and move forward. Let's not look at the West. Ok they are doing this. Let's do this. They are going to gym, let's go into gym. We are a different team and we do our own things to be successful."

Dhoni also said he had started interacting more with Kohli on the field and taking his inputs during the limited overs' matches.

"I have already started using him (Kohli). There is more interaction (on the field). It is evident if you watch the game. We are two individuals who conduct in different ways," Dhoni said when asked about using Kohli's captaincy skills, which have succeeded in Tests.

Under Kohli's leadership India completed a 3-0 clean sweep over New Zealand in the Test rubber recently.
