Ponting to honour 100th birth anniversary of Sir Don Bradman

By Staff

Sydney, Jun 20 (UNI) Australian captain Ricky Ponting will honour Sir Donald Bradman at a special Centenary Dinner on August 27 here to mark the 100th birth anniversary of 'The Don'.

The Centenary Dinner, to be held at the Westin Hotel here, will celebrate Sir Donald Bradman's contribution to Australian society and the role he played in shaping how an emerging nation defined itself.

Ponting will be the first current international cricketer to deliver the Oration, an event which honours the career, contribution and memory of the world's greatest-ever batsman.

Cricket Australia (CA) CEO James Sutherland said that the Centenary Dinner was a chance for Australian cricket to acknowledge the contribution of a great player but also a significant adminstrator.

''The dinner will be one of the most prestigious events this year and we're extremely happy that Ricky Ponting has agreed to play a major role in the event,'' Sutherland said in a statement.

''Sir Donald Bradman is arguably the most famous and celebrated Australian in history and it's important that we acknowledge his legacy in an appropriate manner. His records are something that all international cricketers strive to emulate and his influence on Australian cricketers continues to the present day,'' the statement added.
