Ponting plays 40th World Cup match, eclipses McGrath''s record

Ahmedabad, Feb 21 (PTI) Australian skipper Ricky Pontingtoday created the record of most appearances in World Cup whenhe led his side against Zimbabwe in his 40th match -- onemore than former teammate Glenn McGrath.

Before today''s clash, Ponting was tied with pacemanMcGrath on 39 matches.

Explosive Sri Lankan batsman Sanath Jayasuriya andlegendary Pakistan paceman Wasim Akram, now retired, hadfeatured in 38 World Cup matches.

Sachin Tendulkar played in his 37th World Cup match inIndia''s opener against Bangladesh on Saturday.

Ponting had said yesterday that he was not aware of therecord but was happy to so do.
