Rewind: When Yuvraj Singh won World Cup for a 'special person'

When India won the World Cup in , one cricketer played the tournament for a "special person" and was one of the heroes of the triumph. Four years on, that player does not have a chance to aim for a second crown while the "special person" has bid adieu to the game.

World Cup Special

It was Yuvraj Singh, who announced that he was playing the World Cup for a "special person" and only after winning the trophy on April 2 did he reveal his name - which was none other than batting legend Sachin Tendulkar.

One of the heroes of that World Cup glory - Yuvraj, due to age and lack of runs, has been out of favour and is not part of the current 15-man squad for this year's tournament.

Tendulkar, after winning the World Cup, played the ODI format till early 2012 and later retired same year. However, he continued to play Tests for one more year and bowed out of international cricket in November 2013.

Yuvraj, as many cricketers in India and across the globe, considered Tendulkar as his idol. The left-hander always sought the Mumbaikar's help in tough times on the field.

"I am playing this tournament for a special person," Yuvraj had announced to the media after taking India to the semi-finals of 2011 World Cup in Ahmedabad. Thanks to his on that day against Australia in the quarter-finals, India completed a tough run chase.

"That special person always comes into my mind whenever I am in a pressure situation. Hopefully it will work out in the end," he had added.

At the same press conference he had promised that he would reveal the name of that person on the day of the final - April 2.

After India Sri Lanka by 6 wickets at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium, Yuvraj, along with his captain MS Dhoni, faced the media and the left-hander announced Tendulkar's name.

"Very sorry to disappoint you, guys. It was not for my girlfriend or my fiancee, but for Sachin Tendulkar," Yuvraj said, who was the Player-of-the-series for scoring 369 runs and claiming 15 wickets.

Four years after those memorable moments, the 33-year-old Yuvraj's international career looks over now. Many of his fans are still heartbroken over his World Cup omission.

Also, this World Cup will the first for India without Tendulkar since 1992.

Many Indian fans will definitely miss both Tendulkar and Yuvraj at this year's World Cup.
