S Aravind replaces Umesh Yadav in India ODI squad; Injured Ashwin not picked

New Delhi, Oct 19: Left-arm paceman Sreenath Aravind was today called into the Indian ODI squad for the remaining 2 matches against South Africa. He has replaced Umesh Yadav in the 15-man squad. R Ashwin, who is injured, has been left out.

Aravind made his international debut earlier this month against South Africa in the 1st T20I in Dharamsala. However, he was ignored for the next 2 games and was not part of the ongoing ODI series in the first 3 matches. The selectors picked the squad today in Delhi.

The 31-year-old Karnataka bowler took 4 wickets on Saturday (October 17) to help his team take the first innings lead against Vidarbha in the Ranji Trophy.

Umesh, who played in 1st 2 ODIs and dropped for the 3rd against South Africa, was expensive. He took 3 wickets conceding 123 runs in 18 overs at an economy rate of 6.83.

Ashwin, who sustained a side strain during the 1st ODI, is the other man to miss out. However, he was today (October 19) named in the Test squad to face the Proteas. He has more than 2 weeks to recover from the injury as the first Test starts in Mohali on November 5.

South Africa lead the 5-match series 2-1. The visitors won the opener and 3rd game in Kanpur and Rajkot respectively. India tasted success in Indore. The 4th ODI is on Thursday (October 22) in Chennai.
