South Africa beat West Indies by 163-runs in Trinidad Test

Sydney, Jun 14 (ANI): South Africa defeated the West Indies by 163-run on day four of the first test at Queen's Park Oval.

Fast bowler Dale Steyn claimed 3-65 tpp bowl out the West Indies for 293, after South Africa set an improbable target of 457 from its second innings to win.

Captain Chris Gayle top-scored with 73 and there was a late show from the tail-enders, but the Proteas sealed an easy win with a day to spare.

Steyn, who took 5-29 in the first innings, was declared the Man of the Match, The Stdney Morning Herald reports.

Fellow pacer Morne Morkel removed both West Indies openers to finish with 2-49 while left-arm spinner Paul Harris took 2-91.

Earlier, South Africa skipper Graeme Smith fell 10 runs short of a century as they took their overnight score of 155-2 to 206-4 before declaring midway through the morning session.

The West Indies second innings was quickly demolished by Steyn and Morkel.

Morkel trapped Travis Dowlin leg before for one while Brendan Nash scored 13 before he drove at Steyn edging to wicketkeeper Mark Boucher at 39-2.

The West Indies' most experienced duo, Gayle and Shivnarine Chanderpaul, shared a stand of 55 before Jacques Kallis made a decisive breakthrough.

Dwayne Bravo hit 49 off 74 balls, and shared resilient stands with Narsingh Deonarine (23) and Denesh Ramdin (9).

The West Indian lower order showed a fight as Sulieman Benn (42), Shane Shillingford (27) and Ravi Rampaul (18 not out) threatened to take the match into the final day. (ANI)
