'Suffocated' by BJP, Sidhu now invited to join Congress

Amritsar, April 12: Punjab Congress seems to have tried to take advantage of the crisis between Navjot Singh Sidhu and leaders of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The former cricketer, who may quit BJP, received invitation to join Congress.

Raj Kumar Verka, Congress MLA from Amritsar West proposed Sidhu to join the party saying, "I have sent the proposal to Rahul Gandhi to welcome Navjot Sidhu in Congress. Sidhu's mother fought on Congress ticket for MLA twice."

He also added, "His father remained Patiala district president of Congress. The children should follow the footsteps of parents. Sidhu made a mistake by joining BJP. He is the right man in wrong party. I invite him to come back to the party with which his parents were associated."

BJP sources earlier on Thursday, April 11 said that senior party leader Arun Jaitley may replace Sidhu and contest from Amritsar. The former cricketer won Lok Sabha elections thrice from Amritsar. His wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu too won as an MLA from Amritsar in the 2012 Punjab assembly elections.

However, BJP President Rajnath Singh spoke to Sidhu on Friday. The party president reportedly asked BJP National General Secretary JP Nadda to mediate and sort out the differences.

Sidhu, who is currently not available to make any comment, may resign from politics, hinted his wife while posting on social networking site Facebook.

Mrs Sidhu, while writing on her Facebook wall, said, "How can you let an honest leader survive? One who does not believe in corruption, does not support criminals, does not become party to commission system, what good can he do to party?"

"So, finally you pair up to push him aside, make him feel suffocated in the system," added Mrs Sidhu while igniting speculations regarding her husband's resignation as a politician.

Mrs Sidhu also clarified the stand taken by her husband who now seems to have switched over to doing television shows. She said the former cricketer was sidelined as a BJP MP.

While asked on her post on the social networking site, Mrs Sidhu said, "Since the past six months, I've been listening that my husband Sidhu is keeping away from the system, he's not working for the system. Being in the system, one must have the liberty to choose your people and if you can't do so, the system suffocates you."

While asked about Sidhu's decision of contesting election, his wife said, "My husband will not contest parliamentary elections from Amritsar and a decision in this context was taken long back as the BJP ignored and sidelined him and his local team, which have been working in the constituency for more than a decade now."
