Terrorists came as cricketers. Bandh saved many lives

Srinagar, March 13: There is always heavy security in the area as the Bemina police academy had been attacked in the past. The terrorist came into the camp as cricket players and carried grenades in sports kit. they mixed with the children playing cricket at the playground.

In the first suicide attack in Kashmir in three years, militants on Wednesday stormed a CRPF camp in Bemina, killing five jawans and injuring seven others. The two militants, who carried out the attack, were also killed.

The Bemina area houses a police residential colony that includes a school for children of the para-military forces. Fortunately, the school was closed and few children were playing cricket as the attack took place today.

Bemina locality is also very close to the 1A National Highway bypass road. This could be one of the reason why CRPF camp at Bemina came under fire. The terrorists could easily gain entry into the area through the highway and may have planned to escape by the same way.

In fact, more casualities were avoided as Srinagar schools and colleges were shut today due to a strike over the issue of returning the body of Mohammad Afzal Guru, who was hanged after being convicted for the 2001 Parliament attack.

The shutdown, called by Majlis Mashawarat (Consultation Committee) of the separatist group, had forced closure of shops, banks, petrol pumps and many business establishments in Srinagar.
