Melbourne, Jan 17: Aggressive Virat Kohli never misses an opportunity to give it back to the opposition when he is targeted. And it was the same in the 3rd ODI against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Sunday (January 17).
Kohli breaks De Villiers' record
On a day when Kohli broke South African AB de Villiers' batting record, there was a moment when the Indian vice-captain hit back at Australian all-rounder James Faulkner with a "smashed you" response.
Having gone past his half century and batting on 72, Kohli played out 4 dot balls from Faulkner in the 35th over of the innings. (3rd ODI report)
On the 5th ball, Kohli took a single and Faulkner had few words to say to the Indian batsman. The 27-year-old Kohli, as he is always, did not back off. He replied in his aggressive way.
There were words exchanged between Faulkner and Kohli as the bowler went back to his bowling mark and the Indian was at the non-striker's end. English umpire Richard Kettleborough looked on.
The stump microphone picked up this from Kohli - "I have smashed you enough in my life. You are wasting your energy."
There were other things said as well but were inaudible. It continued for the next over too, 37th of the innings when Faulkner returned.
When this incident happened, VVS Laxman and Dean Jones were doing commentary. And they too were discussing about "something happening" between Kohli and Faulkner.
The conversation did make Kohli more aggressive as he smashed Scott Boland, in the next over (36th) for a huge six, the 1st of the match. Kohli went on to bring up his 24th ODI century.
