World Cup cricket: When Australia's Kepler Wessels was castled by Kapil Dev

Sydney, March 25: India will take on Australia in the second semi-final of the 2015 cricket World Cup. It will be the 11th meeting between the two teams in World Cup. Australia have won 7 of the 10 WC encounters that have taken place between the two sides till today.

However, there is a nice little stat in India-Australia WC encounters. In the first-ever match that had taken place between the two teams at Old Trafford in England in 1983, the Australian team featured Kepler Wessels, who captained South Africa later, and he was the first wicket to fall in the history of India-Australia rivalry in World Cup.

Wessels could manage just 5 runs from 1 balls before getting castled by Indian captain Kapil Dev. Australia went on to win the match by 162 runs, thanks to 110 from Wessel's opening partner Trvor Chappell.

Wessels later captained South Africa in the World Cup in 1992, when the Proteas came back to international cricket, and led his side to the semifinal which they lost to unfortunate rain rules.

The left-handed batsman found himself in a controversy along with Kapil Dev during a bilateral series against India in South Africa in 1992. Wessels had allegedly hit Kapil's leg with his bat when the all-rounder ran Peter Kirsten out after warning him twice for backing up too far as he ran into bowl. No action was taken against Wessels, however, due to lack of visual evidence.
