World Record: AB de Villiers blasts 31-ball 100

Johannesburg, Jan 18: South African captain AB de Villiers set two world records against West Indies here at Wanderers Stadium today. (Full list of records broken by De Villiers)

The right-hander, batting at number three, smashed the fastest 50 in ODIs, off 16 balls and then went on to claim the fastest ton ever in 50-over cricket, reaching the milestone in just 31 balls. This was after West Indies captain Jason Holder won the toss and chose to field.

World record man - AB de Villiers

His sensational innings ended in the final over of South African innings when he fell for a breathtaking 149 off just 44 balls with 9 boundaries and 16 sixes (joint world record with Rohit Sharma).

The fastest hundred in ODI was set last year by New Zealand's Corey Anderson, off 36 balls, erasing the previous mark of Shahid Afridi (37 balls). Today, De Villiers was in unbelievable hitting form as he pulverised West Indian attack. This was De Villiers' 19th ODI ton in 177th match.

Thanks to De Villiers' belligerent batting and tons from Hashim Amla (153 not out) and Rilee Rossouw (128), South Africa posted a record 439/2 in 50 overs in the 2nd ODI of the series. This is the first time in ODI history that all top 3 batsmen scored hundreds.
