Younis expresses regrets over his comments on captaincy issue

By Pti

Karachi, Jan 25 (PTI) Pakistan cricket coach Waqar Younishas expressed regrets over his comments on the World Cupcaptaincy issue that he recently made on a television channel.

The former Test captain''s comments did not go down wellwith the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and it issued a noticeto Waqar to explain his remarks.

"Yes, Waqar has submitted a reply to the notice that theboard had sent him. And Waqar has said that he would becareful in future while giving statements," a source in theboard told PTI.

Waqar had earlier said that he was surprised that the PCBhad announced the World Cup squad but not the captain, addingthat it was all the more surprising as all the other teams hadnamed their captains.

He had further added that only the board could explainwhat reasons it had for withholding the captain''s name for themega-event, while declaring the 15-member squad.

"Waqar has expressed regrets over his comments andconceded that he spoke on an issue, which is not in his domainas national team coach," the source said.

"He has also assured us he will be careful while givingstatements in future," the source added.

The World Cup captaincy issue has attracted a huge debatein Pakistan over who should be leading the team in the WorldCup -- Shahid Afridi or Misbah-ul-Haq.

Afridi''s supporters have even spun the theory that thebatting collapse in the first One-day International atWellington was strange as the same batsmen had scored plentyof runs in the Test series against New Zealand under Misbah''scaptaincy.

But Afridi-led Pakistan lost the first ODI by a thumpingmargin of nine wickets against the Kiwis.

Sources has claimed that Waqar privately told the boardthat it would be unwise to change the captain for the one-dayteam at the eleventh hour before the World Cup.

"Waqar is backing Shahid Afridi to be given the captaincyfor the World Cup as he believes the experienced allroundercan deliver the goods in the high pressure tournament," thesource added.

However, the lobby pushing for Misbah''s appointment ascaptain are naturally not pleased with the views of Younis.
