Bengaluru, February 14: Premier League giants Arsenal and Liverpool are ready to go head-to-head for German and Schalke star Max Meyer in the Summer window, according to reports.

Both the teams are currently looking for midfield additions in the Summer and apparently have made an enquiry about the 22-year-old German player who can operate as an attacking midfielder, forward or even in a deep-lying playmaker role.

Gunners are crying out for a proper holding midfielder for years now and after a consistent low-key performance from the likes of Xhaka and El-Neny, Wenger has reportedly made a midfield recruitment priority and is looking for a player who is good enough with the ball.

Liverpool on the other hand is also looking for the same after the departure of their star midfielder Coutinho and with one of their midfielders, Can all set for a transfer to Juventus next Summer, the Reds have also decided to jump into the market for a ball playing holding midfielder to which Meyer perfectly suits the bill.

Meyer had mostly been an out and out attacker since his playing days however since this season, Schalke boss Domenico Tedesco deployed him in the heart of the midfield with a holding midfield role.

Many eyebrows were raised at first with such a strange decision. However slowly the player started to hit out hard at his critics with his impressive performance and currently the player has established himself as one of the best midfielders of Bundesliga.

Seeing his versatility, both Liverpool and Arsenal are on alert and both of them have reportedly enquired about the player. Also with the German international on the verge of being out of contract at the end of the season, he has now become a hot property for all the top clubs.

Schalke has already lost one of their best midfielders Goretzka to Bayern this season on a free transfer and he is set to join the Bavarian side this summer. And now the 22-year-old could reportedly follow the same path to make his move to a new destination if offers from such big sides come calling.

Schalke CEO Christian Heidel also has not ruled out the player's possible departure in the next Summer. However he suggested that the club is willing to give him a new contract but it will be up to the player.

"Max will be deciding shortly if he wants to stay at Schalke past the summer," Heidel said. "Max is very happy here, Schalke is his home, we will try to make him as comfortable financially as possible.

"He is playing the best season of his life, and the coach has found a position for him that Max didn't believe he could play."

Meyer has started 24 times for Schalke this season, scoring one goal in the process and has been one of the main pillars of the rejuvenated Schalke side who are now currently sitting sixth in the league table, just four points behind second-placed Leipzig.
