Bengaluru, Dec 5: The world is yet to overcome the shock of the untimely death of an Australian cricketer on the field just three days before his 27th birthday. Talented batsman Phillip Hughes was given a teary farewell at a funeral at Macksville, his hometown in New South Wales on December 3, six days after he died in a hospital in Sydney where he was admitted after getting fatally hit in the neck by the ball while batting. Exactly a decade ago, a Brazilian footballer named Cristaino Junior met the same fate while playing for Dempo against Mohun Bagan in the Federation Cup finals in a stadium in Bangalore. The 25-year-old footballer had a collision with Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Subrata Paul while scoring his second goal and collapsed. Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful and he was dead on arrival at the hospital.

The goalkeeper was suspended for two months on disciplinary grounds. It was said Paul was over-aggressive while tackling Junior.

In case of Hughes though, the bowler didn't find it as harsh as Paul. Sean Abbott, the 22-year-old all-rounder who made his international debut in October, returned to training with New South Wales on Tuesday and attended Hughes's funeral. The man has earned sympathy from the global cricketing community with no one blaming for the tragedy.
