EPL: Gerrard penalty helps Liverpool beat Spurs 3-2

Liverpool, Mar 11: Luis Suarez won the battle against Gareth Bale as Liverpool came back to beat Tottenham 3-2 at Anfield.

The Reds captain Steven Gerrard scored the winning penalty 8 minutes from time to send Liverpool in sixth place above their rivals Everton.

Suarez took his goal-scoring tally to 29 in all competitions and scored his 22nd in the league after giving Liverpool an early lead. Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen scored twice to put the visitors ahead, but a mistake from Kyle Walker and keeper Hugo Lloris allowed Stewart Downing to equalise.

Spurs were the better team throughout the game but just two mistakes cost them two goals. Another backpass, this time from Jermain Defoe drew Benoit Assou-Ekotto to tackle Suarez in the penalty area.

Liverpool's talisman and captain Gerrard stepped up to send Lloris the wrong way and earn them three successive victories in the league and for the first tiem under Brendan Rodgers Liverpool managed to beat an opponent in the top-four.

Newcastle United vs Stoke City 2-1

Papiss Cisse injury time strike helped Newcastle United come back and claim all three points beating Stoke City 2-1 at St James Park.

Newcastle moved nine points clear of the relegation zone and earned their third straight victory at home while Stoke suffered their fourth defeat in five games.

Jonathan Walters put the visitors ahead after converting a penalty in the 67th minute, but Yohan Cabaye equalised with a sensational free-kick. Late in injury time Sylvian Marveaux found Cisse in front of goal and he fired past Asmir Begovic to steal all three points.
