Old Trafford, Apr 5: Manchester United beat Aston Villa 3-1 to move one point above Manchester City and into third place in the Premier League.
It was a sixth Premier League win in succession for United and puts more pressure on City, who take on Crystal Palace on Monday before a huge Manchester derby clash with United next weekend on Sunday, April 12.
Ander Herrera, the central midfielder for Manchester United scored twice, one in the 43rd minute and second goal in the 90th minute. Wayne Rooney added a second goal when he spun and fired into the top corner. With yesterday's one goal, Rooney has now scored 185 goals in the English Premier League matches.
The 3-1 demolition was enough to take United above bitter rivals Manchester City, although Manuel Pellegrini's team will go second if they beat Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Monday. United are now eight points above fifth-placed Liverpool as they aim to return to the Champions League after a season without European football.
Van Gaal's side now face a vital spell with a home derby against Manchester City followed by away match to leaders Chelsea. Manchester United will now play 2 matches at home and 4 away matches.
