German football team gets grand welcome at home

Berlin, July 15: Over 2,50,000 fans assembled at Berlin's Brandenburg Gate to welcome footballers of Germany's national team who won football's most coveted prize, the Fifa World Cup 2014, at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil on Sunday. German won their fourth World Cup title after defeating Argentina 1-0 at extra time.

The jubilant fans waving Germany's tricolour national flag erupted in applause the moment the flight carrying the German football team touched down. The Lufthansa jet that carried the heroes back home bore the words "Fanhansa" and "Victors' Plane" on either sides.

The fans began to assemble in central Berlin before dawn and more gathered at the airport as the day progressed.

Germany won their 1st World Cup after reunification by defeating Argentina 1-0

Captain Philipp Lahm was the first player to emerge from the aircraft holding the golden Fifa trophy. He was followed bt midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger who had his shoulders draped with the German flag.

Germany won the World Cup for the first time since the Reunification of 1990. West Germany had won the cup thrice since 1954 with their last victory coming against Argentina 24 years ago in Rome in Italy.
