'Bunch of gays' remark scathes German squad

By Samyuktha

Berlin, Jul 14: The German squad has been denied some time to even enjoy their impressive show at the FIFA World Cup 2010, where they grabbed the bronze, a statement branding some of the players in the team as a "bunch of gays" has hit the headlines.

Michael Becker, an agent and close advisor to injured German skipper Michael Ballack since 1999, reportedly revealed the names of homosexual players in the team.

Germany magazine Der Spiegel said that Becker made these remarks in an interview two months ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2010. An essay titled 'New German Men' recounts the interview.

Besides this, The Guardian has reported that around the same the agent told journalists at Ballack"s new club Bayer Leverkusen that there was a former national player who wants to spill the beans on the 'bunch of queers' in the team.

As this scathing attack comes in the wake of the spat between Ballack and current incumbent Philipp Lahm, the remarks have sparked off anger against the agent itself.

The writer of the essay in Der Spiegel, Alexander Osang remarked that homosexuality was "a synonym for anything that Becker did not understand", which apparently also even includes the refined style of game play encouraged by the coach Joachim Loew.
