ISL: Atletico de Kolkata's Helder Postiga dreams of becoming champion as captain

By Sujata Sarkar

Kolkata, Sep 23: Helder Postiga, the Portuguese striker who has been announced as the captain of Atletico de Kolkata (ATK) for the forthcoming Indian Super League (ISL) football tournament, scheduled to kick off on October 2 in Guwahati, seems determined to produce his best and dreams of making ATK champions under his captaincy.

Full schedule of ISL 2016

ATK have returned to Kolkata following a three-week pre-season intensive training in Segovelia in Spain on Thursday (September 22).

And within couple of hours after their return, the team's Spanish coach Jose Molina initiated for the training in the evening. The players also did not look discontent over the schedule.

Postiga however, asked about his intention this season, said, "As a captain I have only one aim. That is to deliver my best and to try to make our team champions in the League for the second time."

Incidentally, the former World Cupper who has played along with Cristiano Ronaldo had to go back due to a knee injury after having struck twice in the ATK's opening match against Chennaiyin FC in last season's ISL.

However, the three footballers who failed to go to Spain with ATK due to their engagement with club have joined the franchise team on Thursday. The team, before their kick off in the League this season in the first week of next month, will continue training in Kolkata.

However, on the other side, uncertainty over Sunil Chettri's participation in the first phase of ISL looms large due to his club Bengaluru FC's engagement in the ongoing AFC Cup.

Bengaluru FC have already reached the semi-finals of the AFC Cup defeating Singapore team Tampine Rovers. And now the team has flown to Malaysia to play their first leg semi-final match against Johor Darul.

Bengaluru FC will have to play their second leg semi-final match against Malaysian team on 19 October.

The team's coach has already instructed he will not allow any player of his team to join ISL before completing the second leg semifinal tie on 19th October while ISL will start from 2nd October. So, as a whole the scenario looks complicated as Mumbai City FC will not get Sunil Chettri till October 19.
