Bengaluru, August 14: Liverpool probably could not have hoped for a worse transfer window. Despite having big hopes this summer with Champions League football at the club, they have struggled to get their targets and are now fighting to keep their star player Philippe Coutinho who recently submitted a transfer request.
Things could possibly get even worse for them as another midfielder Emre Can is also being linked with an exit as Italian giants Juventus look to land him.
Liverpool have told Emre Can he is going nowhere, despite the on-going contractual dispute. The midfielder has been on Juventus' wish-list for a while now, and the Serie A champions are expected to lodge a £23million bid for the German.
The German midfield powerhouse is in the final year of his contract but the Reds are looking to tie him to a new deal, in which the player is demanding a reported £100,000 a week.
Reports claim Liverpool are prepared to meet this but a few other aspects of the contract are making negotiations stall.
If no agreement can be met, manager Jurgen Klopp is prepared to lose Can for nothing next summer rather than lose a key player weeks into the season and causing disrupt in his plans. His side have already been weakened in the defensive midfield department after the departure of Lucas to Lazio.
Liverpool are also short of options in midfield with Adam Lallana injured and Philippe Coutinho possibly on his way out. Any deal for primary target Naby Keita also looks unlikely and the Reds are right now sweating on the situation of Can who scored the goal of the season in the league last season.
Liverpool fans will want clarity on the matter as soon as possible, but they'd much prefer a contract extension rather than see him move elsewhere.
