New Delhi, Aug 23: Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is eyeing a late deal for Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic, according to reports of Spanish outlet Diario Gol.

The 23-year-old Croatia international has failed to get proper game time under Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane at the Bernabeu and started only in the 19 La Liga games for Real's last term.

The former Inter Milan player is now supposedly been despondent with his current absence of game time and is reportedly eager about a move to Merseyside.

According to reports, Liverpool were targeting the midfielder as an alternative for Philippe Coutinho as the Brazil worldwide has been actively linked with a move to the Nou Camp as of late.

The Reds are determined they will keep hold of the Brazilian attacker in spite of him making a transfer request and several bids from Barcelona. It is understood that Liverpool have fended off interest from Barcelona in Coutinho so the Brazilian international is not moving anywhere at least this season.

However, with still one week remaining on the transfer deadline day, anything could happen so it can't be ruled out if the 23-year-old Kovacic could yet be turning out at Anfield this season.

Jurgen Klopp has been trying to sign a central midfielder all the window, however, failed to sign his top target RB Leipzig's Naby Keita. But should they now get the grip of the versatile young Croat midfielder late in the window, it will be worth every penny as the midfielder will add huge fire powers in the team and could turn out to be a superior inclusion ahead of Emre Can, Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum.

Liverpool have already signed three players, Dominic Solanke, Mohamed Salah and Andrew Robertson so far this summer and should Kovacic complete this proposed move, he would become Liverpool's fourth major addition.
