Manchester City lose to Barcelona, knocked out of Champions League

Nou Camp, Mar 19: Manchester City became the last English team to exit from the UEFA Champions League. Arsenal lost to Monaco on away goals two days ago as the Gunners failed to make the last 8 of the Champions League for 5th straight session despite beating Monaco in the second leg of their last 16 tie.

Manchester City became the last English club to have bowed out of the Champions League. Already leading 2-1 from the first leg of the last-16 tie, Barcelona ripped through City as Neymar hit the post early on.

Lionel Messi's masterclass in the 31st minute dumped Manchester City out of the Champions League as the Premier League failed to provide a team in the last eight for the second time in three seasons.

Messi set up Ivan Rakitic in the 31st minute, who lobbed Joe Hart for a first-half goal. City then needed two goals to take it to extra-time but Sergio Aguero's penalty was saved after he was fouled. Manchester City have now failed to reach the quarter-finals in each of their four Champions League campaigns.

The Argentine forward, Messi praised the performance of Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart after the England number one made a string of outstanding saves to avoid his side being humbled in Wednesday's Champions League last-16 second leg.

Barca won 1-0 on the night, and progressed 3-1 on aggregate to the quarterfinals. But the scoreline would have been very different without Hart regularly denying Messi and strike partners Neymar and Luis Suarez throughout the 90 minutes at Camp Nou.

Premier League leaders Chelsea battled to a 1-1 draw in their last-16 first-leg game at Paris St Germain but were stunned when 10-man PSG fought back to draw 2-2 and progress on away goals.

Arsenal didn't mind a draw against Monaco in the last 16 but imploded in a 3-1 defeat in the first leg in Anfield Stadium, an excellent 2-0 victory in Monaco proved insufficient to stop the French side advancing on away goals. The French side have proved strong for the likes of English clubs like Chelsea and Arsenal in the Champions League.

All the three English clubs (Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City) are out of the Champions League now. As three Spanish clubs (Real and Atletico Madrid, Barcelona), two French clubs (Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco) and Juventus, an Italian club have all qualified for the last 8 of the Champions League.
