Munich air disaster 1958: Fans pay tribute to Manchester United players

Bengaluru, Feb 6: 59 years ago on this day (February 6, 1958) the football world witnessed one of the biggest tragedies in the history of the game.

British European Airways flight carrying the Manchester United team had crashed moments after take-off at the Munich airport.

A total of 23 people died in the plane crash out of which 8 football players and 3 coaching staff members of Manchester United were there.

The team had qualified for the semi-final of European Cup and they were returning from Belgrade after defeating Red Star Belgrade. The flight had halted at Munich on the way for refueling.

The team who were supposed to return from a successful away trip never made it back but remained forever in the hearts of the Manchester United fans as well as football fans around the world.

The team was famously known as 'Busby Babes'. Led by legendary manager Sir Matt Busby, they were one of the finest teams in Europe at that time.

Among the survivors, the most notable name was Sir Bobby Charlton who later became an icon and a club legend.

Every year fans around the world remember and pay their homage to those 11 brave souls who became immortal in every fans' heart.
