Sam Allardyce not sure about retaining Wayne Rooney as England captain

Bengaluru, July 25: The Football Association had appointed former Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce as the new coach of the English national football team last week.

Allardyce replaced Roy Hodgson, who resigned from his post after a terrible performance of England at the Euro 2016.

Since joining the English national team, Allardyce addressed the media for first time today.

Here are the excerpts for Sam Allardyce's press conference:

The manager was aksed about how he felt on being appointed as the new England boss, he said: "I think from my point of view what hit me the most is the overwhelming support from all areas I have received over the last few days. It has not only been good will from friends but also the nation as whole.

"For me that gives me a very warm feeling about taking up this opportunity. I am very proud to be named the new England manager and I look forward to the task in hand and qualify for the World Cup and take it from there."

On retaining Wayne Rooney as the English captain, Allardyce opined: "It is far too early to make any predictions and will not make any decisions until I meet the players and coaching staff. It is my first day in and getting my feet under the table and meeting everyone.

"Sammy Lee is going me for a second time and I will rely on his international experience. He will join me."

The English boss further spoke on his experiences as a manager. He said: "I have managed some world class players. Fernando Hierro, Youri Djorkaeff, Jay-Jay Okocha, Gary Speed, Nicolas Anelka and Michael Owen. I have managed some talented players, the good thing about that is they make your life easier, they know what you want.

"Working with the England elite players will be very exciting for me because they will take on board ideas very quickly. Winning no trophies or cups, unfortunately, as an English manager I never got to go right to the top of the Premier League. I saved clubs and never got relegated, and they are not the same as winning the FA Cup or Capital One Cup, but they are big achievement."

Sam Allardyce sounded confident about his job, "I wouldn't suggest we are at rock bottom. People see me as being able to turn a club around very quickly and that comes around by taking West Ham up, keeping Blackburn and Sunderland up but I consider myself to have much more than that label.

"I can turn things around quickly and get amongst staff and create a successful journey and that starts by us all pulling together."
