Sikkim: Footballer Baichung Bhutia's mentor's home collapses

Gangtok, Sep 24: The house of the mentor of footballer Biachung Bhutia has been collapsed in earthquake hit Gangtok in Sikkim on Saturday, Sep 24.

The five-storey building of Baichung's mentor and the state sports secretary Karma P Bhutia collapsed when an adjoining six-storey building fell against it.

The six-storey building was registered on the name of late Sonam Choda Lepcha, a minister in the Nar Bahadur Bhandari government.

Baichung along with other top sports officials opened one football club at the first floor of Karma's house. The club officials on Saturday informed, "Karma and his daughter, Rinzing were watching television while two carpenters were working when suddenly he saw the adjoining building begin to sway and start tilting to its left. Both of them managed to come out just in time. But two carpenters were trapped as was Bhutia"s drive."

All cups and trophies have been bruised under the collapsed office, however, the club officials claimed, "We are yet to assess the damage."

The incident occurred when the state capital witnessed a destructive earthquake following a flash flood. The quake, measuring 6.8 magnitude in the richter scale, shattered the entire North-East India on Sep 18. More than 115 were dead and 75 people reportedly were killed only in Sikkim.
