Shanghai, July 18: Former Chelsea FC and Newcastle United striker Demba Ba suffered a horrific injury while playing for Chinese Super League club Shanghai Shenhua yesterday (July 17).
It was a derby match against Shanghai SIPG. The incident happened around the 63rd minute, when opponent player Sun Xiang made a harmless challenge on the Senegalese international.
Demba Ba's left leg gave way beneath the knee as the forward fell to the ground. His leg got tangled with his opponent's while his studs were in contact with the turf.
After the match Shanghai Shenhua manager said: "It could end his professional career. I would rather lose the game than lose Ba."
The 31-year-old former Chelsea moved to Shanghai Shensua in 2015. He is currently the top scorer in the league with 14 goals in 18 matches.
After a fairly successful stint in the Premier League, Ba had moved to Besiktas in 2014. Chelsea have tweeted wishing Ba a speedy recovery.
Their tweet read: "All at Chelsea FC send our best wishes to former striker @dembabafoot. Get well soon Demba."
