Zinedine Zidane becomes Real Madrid's Director of Football

Madrid, Jul 8: Zinedine Zidane, the legendary footballer from France has got a new role in the high profile La Liga club Real Madrid. The retired French footballer, on Jul 7 announced that he will be working in tandem with coach Jose Mourinho as Real Madrid's new director of football next season.

The new role is another extension of Zidane's Real Madrid connection. Prior to this assignment, he was working as a special advisor to president Florentino Perez and before that he played for the club as a mid-fielder.

has quoted Zidane as saying, "I will be director of football for the first team...Mourinho influenced this decision, but also Florentino [Perez]. We will see [what tasks I am assigned], but I will [be occupying the new role] from Monday until the end of the season."

Speaking about the signing of young French defender Raphael Varane, the three-time FIFA World Player of the Year said, "He has a tremendous future, and it's a good thing to arrive at Real Madrid so young [at 18-years-old]. Varane liked the coach, so that is why he is here."

The former French footballer also spoke about Santos forward Neymar and compared him with another star Robinho. He said, "He is similar to Robinho, but he scores more goals. Neymar is a player who could interest Real Madrid."

When asked about arch-rival Barcelona's interest in the Brazilian, Zidane replied, "It's normal that everyone wants Neymar, but we have to see what the club decides. We have to take things step by step."
