'Snubbed' Hockey players win but refuse Rs 25K prize money

New Delhi, Sept 14: Hockey players, who added a new feather to India's crown by winning the Asian Champions Trophy in China, refused to accept the "too little" prize money - Rs 25,000.

During their facilitation in Delhi, the players refused the prize money offered by Hockey India claiming that the incentive is "too little to fetch even a decent playing kit". The players led by Captain Rajpal Singh turned down the prize money which created a new controversy in the country.

However, Sports Minister, Ajay Maken, making himself aloof from the controversy, tweeted, "Rd 25000 cash award was not announced by Govt but by the Hockey India. Govt. spends all the money on training, coaching & foreign exposure."

Consequently India's victory in Hockey came when Team India crashed completely in England after losing both Test and One Day series with the British.

The cash prize also shows the different attitude towards Cricket players and other sports persons in the country. Team India was awarded with Rs 1 crore and several other prizes, Rs 25,000 indeed seem "too little" to offer or to accept.

India Hockey team beat Pakistan in the Champions Trophy 4-2 in a tie-breaker in the finals of the inaugural championship in China.
