Vidya beats Pargat, elected as Hockey India prez

By Mamatha

New Delhi, Aug 5: Vidya Stokes, was elected as new Hockey India president, on Thursday, Aug 5.

The 82-year-old Vidya Stokes beat former Indian captain Pargat Singh to get elected as the President of Hockey India. Vidya got 41 votes as compared to Pargat Singh's 21 votes.

Meanwhile, Narinder Batra defeated Gunjum Haider 44-18 to retain the post of Secretary General, where as Mushtaque Ahmed was elected as the treasurer.

Hailing from Himachal Pradesh, Vidya Stokes has had a long innings in sports administration.

She has been the head of the Indian Women's Hockey Federation from 1984.

The HI polls were postponed 4 times earlier for varied reasons, most recently on Jul 28 after the Delhi and Bombay High Courts stayed the election process.

While the Delhi High Court stayed the polls following the failure of the Central government to clarify its legal position regarding HI and IHF, the Bombay High Court did the same on a petition filed by the Maharashtra Hockey Association.

HI, however, moved the Supreme Court against the orders and managed to vacate the stay on Jul 30 and obtain a green signal from the apex court to hold its elections.
