Failure forces the mind to fight back and achieve, says 'saint with a gun' Abhinav Bindra

By Sujata Sarkar

Bengaluru, Sep 6: Joydeep Karmakar calls him a "saint with a gun"! Karmakar who missed the bronze by a whisker in the London Olympics 2012 was his team-mate for a long period before that Olympics. He observed that Abhinav Bindra could be the example of three 'D' -dedication, devotion and determination.

And on 4th September after the country's first individual medallist (gold) made his retirement official in New Delhi at National Rifle Association of India's (NRAI) office, Narang when contacted said, "He is simply a phenomenon. I have been watching him for around last 13 years. I have never seen him satisfied with his own performance. Even, after winning a championship Bindra never looked elated. Immediately after the end of the event, he started concentrating on his next engagement."

Bindra reflected the same philosophy while speaking. When reminded about the history he created in Bejing Olympics 2008 by clinching gold medal, Bindra said, "I do not look back. I can only say that looking back to my shooting career as a whole, I am happy. But I do not want to cherish any particular moment."

Even, being the first individual gold medal winner in an Olympics, Bindra does not want to cherish! Karmakar reacted by commenting, "I sent a congratulatory message after Bindra won gold in Bejing. In reply, he said that a performer must have to be consistent. Otherwise, no single achievement remains!"

The 33-year old shooter was given a felicitation by the national federation on the day and later he was asked what would be his message towards the future generation.

Bindra said, "Only hard work. There is no alternative way to reach success. And my personal feeling is that the tenacity to work hard is born out of a failure. One failure forces the mind to fight back. I also had the same way of achieving whatever I have achieved today. I did not have any particular character or individual in front when I began shooting journey."
