Kipyegon adds world title to Olympic gold

LONDON, August 8: Kenya's Faith Kipyegon added the world title to her Olympic gold when she won a the women's 1,500M final at London Stadium on Monday.

Kipyegon, silver medallist two years ago, took up the running with 600 to go and was stride for stride with in-form Sifan Hassan until the Dutchwoman faded while the Kenyan stayed strong to cross the line in four minutes 2.59 seconds.

Jenny Simpson of the United States, the 30-year-old 2011 champion, also showed great track nous as she slipped up the inside and finished like a teenage sprinter to take second.

South Africa's 800M specialist Caster Semenya also powered through on the line to grab the bronze.

Ethiopia's defending champion and world record holder Genzebe Dibaba finished last.

"I knew it would be fast, it is such a quality field," Kipyegon said. "The best was going to win here. It was always going to be quick and competitive."

Kipyegon's epic effort won wholesome praise from all quarters.

Meanwhile, it was business as usual for Poland's Anita Wlodarczyk, who claimed a third world title to add to the gold medals secured at the last two Olympics.

Wlodarczyk, threw 77.39M in round four to virtually seal the contest and improved further in round five.

China's Wang Zheng got silver with an effort of 75.98M while Wlodarczyk's compatriot Malwina Kopron clicnhed the bronze thanks to her first-round leading effort of 74.76m.

Elsewhere, Jamaican flags swirled in triumph for the first time with Omar McLeod winning the 110M hurdles after finishing in 13.04.

Defending champion Sergey Shubenkov, claimed silver in 13.14 while Hungary's Balazs Baji, who clocked 13.28 got the bronze.
