New Delhi, Aug 11 (UNI) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi congratulated Abhinav Bindra on winning the first individual gold medal for India at the Olympics today.
Bindra won the men's 10m air rifle event at the Beijing Olympics to create history.
The last Olympic gold for India came in 1980 in hockey.
Bindra aggregated a total of 700.5 which included 596 points in the qualifying round and 104.5 points in the final round to edge past Athens Olympics' gold medallist Zhu Qinan (699.7) of China who won the silver.
Finland's Henri Hakkinen finished third with 699.4 points.
