Maryland, Jun 20: Rory Mcllroy, put on an amazing display of golf to win the US Open 2011 by eight shots, to affirm his potential as one of the finest in the sport. His victory, also made him the youngest winner of the event since the legendary Bobby Jones in 1923.

With a lead of eight strokes overnight, Mcllroy stayed calm to card a two-under-par 69 on a very humid and overcast day at Congressional Country Club. It was his first major title.

His 16-under aggregate of 268 is an all-time record for the US Open, going past the mark set by Tiger Woods. Woods was was 12-under in winning at Pebble Beach in 2000.

An ecstatic Mcllroy, in the post-match conference said, "The whole week has been incredible...I know how good Tiger was at Pebble in 2000 and I went out today to try and emulate him in some way. Augusta was a valuable experience. I knew what I needed to do today to win. I put a few new things into practice and it paid off."

And added, "It's great to get this first major in the bag ... especially after what's happened the last couple of months."

Admitting that the title triumph could do a world of good to him, especially in terms of confidence, he said, "I felt like I got over the Masters pretty quickly. I was very honest with myself and I knew what I needed to do differently. To be able to finish it off the way I did ... just tells me that I learned from it and I've moved on. Now I've got this, I can go ahead and concentrate on getting some more (majors)."

Staying calm amid the growing expectations around him, his approach to the fourth, set up a second and extended the lead to double figures on 16-under-par. If that was not enough, he frustrated other players in the event by a 15-foot par save on the next and reached the turn in two-under 34.

He put his best foot forward for the 218-yard 10th, positioned in front of the clubhouse, which was beginning to witness a mammoth crowd. A dropped shot on the 12th scarcely, was the only hiccup in his victory march and he returned to 17-under with a birdie on the par-five 16th.
