The initiative for the joint venture came from Mohammad Al Merri, general secretary of Tennis Emirates in an attempt to develop promising talent in the country. The academy will be headed by PTR professional Anil Mathew along with a team of qualified professionals.

Bhupathi was joined by Gaurav Natekar, vice president of MBTA at the opening clinic.

The academy is the first one to be set up outside India and the ninth one on the MBTA roll. Bhupathi is associated with many ambitious projects in India including the latest one to develop an Indian Grand Slam champion by 2018.
