France, Paris: World Number one tennis ace Roger Federer crashed out of the French Open losing out against his fellow swede player, Robin Soderling 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.
In the process Soderling ended Federer's record streak of 23 consecutive major semifinals. Last year Soderling created a big upset for four time champion Rafael Nadal beating him to clear Federer's path which Federer eventually won to grab his first French Open title.
It was an upset defeat for Federer and this is what he said after the match as quoted by AP
“I didn"t think I played a bad match," Federer said. “He came up with some great tennis. It"s much easier to digest this way."
Soderling had suffered 12 straight defeats to Federer in the past but he was more consistent with his strokes in the match especially the groundstokes. He began the tournament seeded at No 5 which is the highest in his career.
Defensively Federer was terrific but he could not handle the offensive play and could not overcome Soderling in the match.
“This is a big win, but it"s not the final," Soderling said. “I don"t want to celebrate too much. I want to focus on the next game."
Soderling will now be facing No. 15-seeded Tomas Berdych who will be making his first appearance in the semi-final stages and the first player from the Czech Republic to reach the Roland Garros semifinals since 1992.
