Clijsters loses the day before she becomes No.1

By Biswajeet Panda
Paris, Feb 14: Petra Kvitová beat top seed Kim Clijsters 6-4 6-3 to win the Paris Open title on Feb 13.

Clijsters, who is having a dream run after she won her maiden Australian Open Singles title and catapulted to the World No.1 ranking, was never allowed by Kvitová to settle down. The World No.1 lost her serves twice in the opening set.

This was Kvitova's first victory against Clijsters in their past three encounters. A delighted Kvitova said, "It's nice to win today against Kim because she is world number one, I think it's my biggest achievement," and added, "It's not logical, I lost my last two matches against Kim so I'm glad I won today."

Clijsters, who suffered from a niggling neck injury, said: "I'm not surprised. I know she can play like that." Clijsters further added that, "I had a little bit of a neck problem but it's not an excuse. She deserved to win."
