Roger Federer names his record 8th Wimbledon trophy as 'Arthur'

Bengaluru, July 30: Swiss tennis great Roger Federer has named his latest Wimbledon trophy as "Arthur". He announced this on the social media today (July 30).

Federer, who on July 16, won a record 19th Grand Slam title at the All England Club, took to the micro-blogging website Twitter to unveil the new name for the Wimbledon silverware.

The 35-year-old Swiss ace defeated Marin Cilic 6-3, 6-1, 6-4 in the final two weeks ago to capture a record 8th Wimbledon trophy. Earlier he had won in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2012.

On Sunday, Federer tweeted a picture of his Wimbledon trophy next to a vase of flowers on a table with the caption, "Nice having Arthur 🏆at the dinner table."

In another tweet, he asked his nearly 8 million followers to guess why he had given that name to the trophy. "Can you guess why I called him Arthur? #GuessRF," he wrote.

Many thought Federer was referring to the late American great Arthur Ashe. But it was not the right answer.

After 42 minutes of wait, Federer revealed that he had named it after Arthur Gore, who won Wimbledon in 1908.

"He's named after Arthur Gore, who won @wimbledon in (19)0(8)!," Federer wrote.

The number 19 signifies the total number of his Grand Slam singles titles, a world record, and 8, a record, being the number of times he won at Wimbledon.

Britain's Gore won Wimbledon singles 3 times (1901, 1908, 1909). He was also world number one and won two gold medals at 1908 Olympics. He died in 1928 at the age of 60. In 2006, he was inducted into the International Tennis Hall Of Fame.
